Reasons Drivers Get Stranded on the Side of the Road

At some point, every motorist gets stranded on the side of the road because of a car-related problem. No vehicle is infallible and normal wear-and-tear issues can create problems at the worst possible times.

Reasons Drivers Get Stranded on the Side of the RoadAmong drivers, some breakdowns are more frequent than others. Here are some of the most common reasons why people get stuck on the side of the road because of car problems:

  • Flat tire – When your car has a flat tire, you must address it ASAP. Not only is it difficult to control your vehicle, but continuing to drive on a flat tire could lead to serious damages to the rim, brake lines, suspension and other parts of your car. It also will crease your chances of getting into an accident.
  • Out of gas – While everyone knows a gas tank must be refilled on occasion, a faulty fuel indicator can actually trigger this problem. To ensure that you don’t experience this, make sure that your gas indicator is working properly. It is wise to refill any time your fuel tank is below one-quarter of its capacity.
  • Dead battery – Every car battery has a lifecycle, just like the batteries in hand-held devices. Adverse weather conditions will cause your battery to drain faster than normal. Also, problems with your vehicle’s alternator may prevent it from recharging your battery as it should. You can extend your battery's life cycle by turning off all electronics and lights when your car is parked or stopped.
  • Overheating – An engine that overheats will create major damage to your vehicle. You can actually see if your vehicle is overheating before the telltale steam-from-beneath-the-hood emerges. When your temperature gauge on the dashboard rises and hits the yellow or red area, it means your engine is on the verge of overheating. When this happens, stop and let your engine cool down. Also, before this happens, check your fluid levels (oil, antifreeze, water) and make sure that these are at the right levels before you start your drive.

These are just a few of the more common reasons why vehicles stall and why drivers find themselves stuck on the side of the road.
